During the month of February, Oxford Veterinary Hospital will be observing the American Veterinary Medical Association’s National Pet Dental  Month. (www.petdental.com).  Our goal is to increase the awareness of all pet loving clients to the importance of your pet’s dental health and teach you to the recognize the signs of dental disease, and thus act to improve the quality of your pet’s lives.

First Three Steps to Success:

Your pet needs dental care - regular, professional care from your veterinarian, AND care at home from you. The American Veterinary Dental Society recommends that pet owners follow three basic steps:

STEP 1: Take your pet to the veterinarian for a dental exam. Don’t wait for his annual checkup if you suspect a problem.

(We  emphasize the importance of dental health every day during every exam.)

STEP 2: Begin a dental care regimen at home. Your veterinarian can suggest steps that may include brushing your pet's teeth. One of the most convenient and effective ways to combat oral disease is feeding specially formulated foods proven effective in combating plaque and tartar buildup. The Seal of Acceptance from the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC), an organization initiated by the American Veterinary Dental Society to guide consumers, appears on products that meet defined standards for plaque and tartar control in dogs and cats. For further information on the VOHC or their product standards, visit www.vohc.org.

(We encourage daily home care and offer many home care products and dental diets such as VOHC approvedHill’s T/D Diet and Science Diet Healthy Advantage Food.)

STEP 3: Schedule regular veterinary checkups. These are essential in helping your veterinarian monitor the progress of your pet's dental health routine. Your veterinary health care team can help you schedule the appropriate visits.

(When oral disease (as well as plaque and tartar buildup) is recognized during your health maintenance exam, a thorough dental assessment and cleaning under anesthesia will be required to treat the problem. We have installed a new dental treatment suite equipped with state of the art dental and anesthetic monitoring equipment.  Also, our doctors and our technicians have pursued specific technical education to ensure the safety and success of your pet's treatment.)

We commend all of you who have already committed to providing improved dental care as evidenced by the improvement in dental health of so many of our patients over the last few years. We have seen the results during your pets' examinations and have  heard from many of you about the improved attitude and activity of your pets, now free of dental pain and infection. We hope to continue to expand our effort during this year to include more of our deserving furry friends in these success stories.
